EARTH HOUR AFTERMATH

Following the eventful evening on the 27th March 2010, Brunei is now officially marked in the world map as a supportive and committed country towards a greener tomorrow.

The event has also marched Brunei’s local artists, Fakhrul Razi and Ali Wally into global recognition.  Their song “Experience” has hit the top 10 on Kristal FM in less than 2 weeks!

Local photographers were also able to prove their talents.  Among more than one thousand submissions for the official Earth Hour photos, 135 pictures were selected as The Best Of Earth Hour 2010, and 5 of them are from the talented photographers in Brunei.

Another historical mark for Brunei is that Brunei Darussalam is recognized in the online Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_hour_2010#Earth_Hour_in_2010 for Earth Hour 2010 and Kampong Ayer Cultural Heritage and Gallery (KACTG) is documented as the landmark that participated for Earth Hour 2010

Organizing an event in a global scale like Earth Hour was made easier as we utilized the tools and best practice standards provided by Earth Hour Global. It was a proven methodology since 2007 and revised through the years. These international standards, policy and procedures helped and give us knowledge and skill on how to carry out a global scale campaign with the support and assistance from the youth associations and those involved.

Report from Global Earth Hour stated the number of cities and countries that participated in 2010 has increased compared to 2009.  As of 26th March 2010, 125 countries, 3483 cities and town, 56 capital cities, 7 continents participated.  Earth Hour mentioned 74.6 million times on Google within 24 hours.  Been the Number 1 worldwide trending topic on Twitter for most of the 24 hours, which never fell below position 7 (at it’s peak 2.2 % of all tweets were Earth Hour related).  Over 1,000 official Earth Hour photos were submitted from around the world. 170,000 views of Earth Hour photos on the Earth Hour official Flickr account. 200,000 views of the official Earth Hour 2010 video over the 25.75 hours of Earth Hour.

P-EWI (B) Sdn Bhd has helped in consultation on the report for the Carbon Footprint Calculation for Earth Hour Brunei at Kg Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery. The amount of carbon emission withheld during Earth Hour has been estimated to be 45kg.  The Carbon Footprint due to the event has been estimated to be 4.82kg

HOW IT ALL STARTED…..

How Brunei became official ?

Brunei Darussalam has been participating Earth Hour unofficially by our local hotels, banks, organizations, restaurants, cafes, authorities and individuals from 2007.

2010 marks a historical milestone for Brunei Darussalam, an oil producing sultanate and it citizens making it stand with the world towards climate change.

The main objectives evolving around Earth Hour 2010 in Brunei:

  1. To make Brunei as the official participating country of in 2010. Identifying an  iconic landmark.
  2. To have witnesses and observers be a part of the event.
  3. To demonstrate to the world Brunei is united with a “can do” spirit involving youth and the community.

Before the mark of Earth Hour 2010 and after 27th March 2010, Earth Hour in Brunei objectives are:

  1. To give awareness and to educate the public about sustainability, conservation and saving energy, our environment and climate change
  2. Brunei Darussalam officially joins the world on Earth Hour 2010.
