Everyday we try to reduce our carbon footprint. Below are few of the everyday practice that we can learn from our team here in Brunei:

  • Almost all lights at our house uses CFL. It a bit expensive, but we rarely replace it, thus is does save money while saving up to 80% of energy used.
  • For those non-CFL bulb, we make use of timer so that it only lights up at night, and others are using dimmer. We are looking forward to replace it in the future to CFL bulb as well.
  • We make use of collected rainwater to water our plants instead of using water from the tap.
  • Water heater for shower, only being use when the water is cold especially early in the morning.
  • My air-condition is in timer. So it will switch off around 5am and automatically switch back on at 5pm. It is the only time I’m in the room.
  • We always carpool. It is more fun when there are a lot of people in the car. You enjoy your friends company as well as saving money from buying petrol, which also reduce your carbon emission.
  • At home, we recycle aluminum, and paper. Its not only save our planet but if you send it to proper place you’ll get few cash by selling it.
  • Some of our appliances are powered by reusable energy e.g. solar. We are looking forward to expand these to other appliances e.g. ambient light for our garden.
  • We grow some of our food, and buy local food as much as we can. Imagine how much carbon emission is produce if you buy and support imported product just to bring it back to your country/home.

  • Switch off the TV when no one is watching.
  • Switch off lights in areas/rooms that no one is occupying (my house use to light up like a Christmas tree)
  • Using timer for thermal pot (we only use hot water for our coffee or chocolate early morning, so the heater only works in the morning and was off the rest of the day)
  • Water is also part of energy.  Nowadays, we consciously turn off the tap and do not keep the shower running, when we are not using it during shower. We  also check for leaks around the house.

  • I make the effort to carpool every chance I can.
  • I turn off my PC monitor if i leave my PC, but still need to have it running.
  • Me and my family only turn on necessary light source when required, and switch everything off by 9pm (so house it totally dark).
  • I opt to walk rather than drive if possible when the destination is near, eg. shopping at Kiulap areas.
